Who Was She, and Who Are We?
Grace O’Malley, also known as Gráinne Mhaol or Granuaile, was a 16th-century Irish noblewoman and pirate queen. Born in County Mayo, Ireland, around 1530, she became a skilled sailor and leader. Renowned for her exploits at sea, O’Malley engaged in piracy and warfare against English forces in defense of Ireland. A fearless and cunning leader, she commanded her own fleet of ships and is celebrated in Irish folklore as a symbol of resistance against domination and a pioneering female figure in history.
